Some Drawbacks of Traditional BIOS
We know how important the BIOS is for the motherboard. BIOS has accompanied with us for more than twenty years, and it has brought us so many convenience. But now, we are suffering more and more drawbacks of traditional BIOS. Here I list some of them. Almost all the problems will be solved in EFI.
1. Traditional character interface
The user interface of BIOS is too simple and characterful. For those people who do not use english as their mother languages, they will have so many difficulties in reading and use.
2. Professional keywords Centralized
We know there so many professional words about PC firmware and software in traditional BIOS. we have no acquaintance with some of them even if he engages in a job of information technology. more people have no any acquaintance with traditional BIOS.
3. Programming with low-grade language
If we want to open/close a hardware, we must access the BIOS. BIOS will initialize it in POST(Power-on Self Test). BIOS is the interface between operating system and firmware. so the BIOS performance determine the computer performance to a certain extent. BIOS is programmed by 16-bit ASM. When 32-bit systems are popular at the present day. 16-bit compatible mode must be reserved for traditional BIOS.
With the 64-bit systems coming. 16-bit mode will be a great drawback in system booting.
4. BIOS upgraded slowless
We'll get a basic BIOS configuration in the motherboard when we first get it. In the following days. we can not upgrade BIOS at anytime. because BIOS version upgrade is so slow. If you want to make your computer support a new hardware, you may need to wait for a new BIOS version.
5. Upgrade or program method draggle
BIOS upgrade must be finished within manual operations. The BIOS can not be update by itself. If you has no any experience with BIOS. There will have much risk in BIOS security.
For many older motherboard. BIOS is burned in ROM or EPROM. If you want to upgrade it. You must draw support by some professional tools.
6.Large-Capacity Disk Support
With the rapid development of hard drive capacity, resulting in large capacity hard disk BIOS support issues more and more often need to upgrade the BIOS to get better support. Traditional BIOS design mechanism does not synchronize with the rapid development of hardware.
7. Hardware Drivers manage
Traditional BIOS can not manage a higher level hardware drivers, so for each operating systems installations, we need to re-install all the hardware drivers, but these drivers are not always updated.
8. Limited Storage Space
Traditional BIOS capacity is extremely limited, usually no more than 2MB, the largest has only 8MB. If you want to add new features to the BIOS, you will certainly be capacity constraints. Thus, we have found only a few motherboard manufacturers that have add some new features in BIOS.
