Manually Set IP Address in Windows 7

If you are using ADSL(or WAN,WLAN) for your network, windows 7 will get the IP address automatically, you do not need to assign any IP address. But you can assign your favorite IP address if your computer is connected to a HUB or a ROUTER. Yes, most time we need to set a static ip address for windows 7, for example, when we share files in local network or some other requirements. This post will introduce how to manually set a static ip address for windows 7.

1. Access Network and Sharing Center

Click these buttons or links in order from the beginning, Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

Or, type "Network and Sharing Center" in the search box in Start.

a. Open your Control Panel from the Start Menu on the taskbar. Refer to Usage of Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7 for details.

b. Then Click Network and Internet, open the Network and Sharing Center. Or you can right-click the network icon in the tray, select Open Network and Sharing Center.

c. Here it is Network and Sharing Center.

2. Open Local Area Connection Properties

Click Local Area Connection, Screenshot like this:

5. Click Properties in the Local Area Connection Status. If you want to assign a IPv4 address for your computer, please select Internet Protocol Version(TCP/IPv4). and click the Properties button, this is the most common selection.

3. Set a static address

In the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) Properties, select Use the following IP address(If you want to cancel the IP address, choose Obtain an IP address automatically, and Press OK). Type your preferred IP address in IP address editbox. Default gateway's value is determined by your gateway, which is usuallly the ROUTER IP address, you can test the IP address in your web browser if you have connected to the local network. Make sure your assigned IP address must has the same network segment with the Default gateway address.

Usually we do not need to change the DNS server address, windows 7 or the ROUTER will get the default DNS server address automatically, next If you want to assign a special DNS server, just type them like this:

Here we set a TCP/IPv4 static address, the default option should be Obtain an IP address automatically afterwindows 7 installation.

Select the next option (Use the following IP address), and fill the three fields (IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway).

How to determine IP address ?

The new IP address should be in the same network segment according to the default gateway. The maximum number computers that the local area could support determined by the subnet mask.

Here my subnet is 255.255.255.0, so there are only 0~255 IP address available for this area. So if my default gateway is 192.168.0.1 with the current subnet mask, IP address must be 192.168.0.x.

How to find subnet mask and default way?

Type command in your command prompt.:

ipconfig -all

4. Click OK to take effect

When you complete all changes, click OK to take effect, you do not need to restart windows 7 normally. If you can not login the network again  with your new IP, just reboot computer. Or you can try these command in windows command shell:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
